The crack with the APC has gotten so wide that if left unchecked might consume what’s left of the ruling party. One would think after emerging victorious at the 2019 elections, the party would have gotten its acts together and begin to deliver on the promises it campaigned on. But with so many forces contending for who controls the party after Buhari’s exit in 2023, things are about to get uglier.
The contending forces led by Nasiru El Rufai, Babatunde Fashola, Rotimi Akeredolu, Kayode Fayemi and Ibikunle Amosun – on one side of the divide – and Bola Tinubu and Adamu Oshiomole on the other side, the battle for who controls the juicy appointments in the second term of president Buhari has began.
This divide is believed to have fuel the leadership crisis in the incoming 9th National Assembly, as some members are against the choice of Ahmed Lawan as Senate President and Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker. Both lawmakers are candidates of Asiwaju. While Tinubu, has been championing party supremacy, others are worried about handling over the legislative arm of government to him and his cronies, which in the long run could be used to arm twist president Buhari in 2023.

The recent reapportionment of Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the Central Bank and the accelerated clearance by the Bukola Saraki-led Senate is also seen as a big blow to the Asiwaju camp.

Daily Times had earlier reported how Tinubu had pencil down his trusted aide (Wale Edun) to replace the Goodluck Jonathan appointee but Buhari’s men had other ideas. Opponents to his nominee argue that handing over such sensitive position to Tinubu’s appointee could be suicidal, as the CBN could end up being his ATM like the Lagos State Government.
In all of this, it appears the El-Rufai camp is having the upper hand with the emergence of Gov. Fayemi as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. As chair of the forum, the Ekiti state governor would be able to influence the nature and course of policies at the national level. He would also be able to mobilise his fellow governors to move against Tinubu on any national issue or appointment.
